I sometimes lose my faith in luck,
You gotta keep your heart young,
Surviving in the world as a stray is one thing, surviving in a world that is becoming over ran with humans is another, and surviving with an over run of humans and stray dogs is a totally different story. Most days it's hard to distinguish friend from foe in any race. Those who appear to be a friend, may turn out to be a foe. You can never leave your back turned for too long, for fear of what could happen.
See all the times I shoulda turned back,
Don't go growin' old before your time has come,
In modern day northern California the population of stray dogs is on the rise, it is at an all time high, and the humans living among them seem to not be concerned with the problem. Canines that were once companions are seen merely as trash or a distant memory. Canines that were once domesticated seemed to have regressed back to their ancestors and have set into a survival state of mind. They begun making their own way of life forming backs and bonds all along the coast of northern California.
I know what it means to be on my own,
You can't take back what you have done,
The canines have began to change and adapt to their environment and new way of life, as the humans that they once shared a bond with seem to be leaving the rural area and moving south to the city. As the population of humans in the north begins to decline the number of stray dogs begins to explode as they make their ways into lowly populated cities and suburbs. Packs begin to grow in size, and rivalries are becoming more and more obvious.
Never did learn how to follow the rules,
Sometimes you don't die quick,
Who will be your friends and foes?

Looks like I'm taking the long way home.
Just like you wished you'd done.
